AMES, Iowa – Seven former Iowa State athletes were presented the most prestigious honor by the Iowa State Athletics Department Friday night at the Sukup End Zone Club. Victor Alexander (men's basketball), Dwayne Crutchfield (football), Ike Hayes (football), Geary Murdock (football), Cael Sanderson (wrestling), Lee-Jay Strifler (men's swimming and diving) and Angie (Welle) Edinger (women's basketball) received their Hall of Fame plaques as the newest members of the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame.
All seven athletes earned All-America honors in their outstanding Cyclone careers.
Crutchfield was one of the best running backs in college football from 1980-81, earning All-America honors and leading the Big Eight in rushing twice.
His punishing, bruising style of running made Crutchfield a fan-favorite during his time in Ames, and his latest achievement makes him very proud.
"When I first found out I was inducted I was shocked, amazed and appreciative," Crutchfield said. "For a guy from Cincinnati to be able to come to a major university like Iowa State and be elected into its Hall of Fame, it's very overwhelming."
If you had to pick the greatest player in Iowa State women's basketball, Edinger (Welle) would certainly appear at the top of the list.
Her incredible four-year career with the Cyclones is littered with school records and awards, including still holding ISU career marks in scoring (2,149) and rebounding (1,209).
Edinger (Welle) was a three-time All-American and the MVP of the 2001 Big 12 Tournament, leading the Cyclones to national prominence.
"You never think about it (being inducted into the Hall of Fame) when you are playing," Edinger (Welle) said. "I was completely humbled and honored. I have so much pride in being a Cyclone and it is such an honor to be included in this outstanding group of athletes."
A total of 175 athletes have been enshrined into the Iowa State Letterwinners Club Athletics Hall of Fame, which was established in 1997.
