IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 22 Iowa State evened the Iowa Corn CyHawk Series with a dramatic 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 30-28) win over Iowa Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The win improved ISU to 6-0 on the season while evening the Iowa Corn CyHawk Series at 2-2 heading into tomorrow's football game at Jack Trice Stadium.
An Iowan led the Cyclone effort, as Defiance's Jess Schaben recorded a season-high 17 kills and nine digs in the win. She was joined in double figures by Grace Lazard (11 kills) and Samara West (10). The Cyclones got 14.0 total blocks, led by eight from Orange City's Alexis Conaway. Charles City's Hali Hillegas led the back-line with 18 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Iowa 19
The visiting Cyclones flew out of the gate, pushing ahead 8-2 with strong play across the board. The Cyclone offense made an Iowa comeback a challenge, as ISU hit over .400 as a team to build its lead to 20-13. However, the home Hawkeyes had a response, cutting the ISU lead to three at 21-18. The Cyclones were able to bring home the set win, as Genesis Miranda posted her third kill of the set to give ISU the 25-19 set win.
Set Two: Iowa 25 Iowa State 23
The second played out very evenly with both sides keeping each other in check. ISU was ahead at 10-8, but Iowa was able to control action in the middle of the set, eventually pushing ahead 19-15. The four-point edge was short-lived as the Cyclones went on a 4-0 run to tie it at 19-19, but Iowa was quickly back ahead at 22-19. Iowa tied up the match on the second asking when Reghan Coyle fired a kill past the Cyclone block at 25-23.
Set Three: Iowa State 26 Iowa 24
Another tight set slowly turned the way of the Hawkeyes, with the Cyclones struggling to slow down the Iowa middle blockers. UI went on a 5-1 run to break an 11-11 tie, into a 16-12 advantage for the home side. The Cyclones pushed their way back into the competition, switching their offense to a 5-1 and cutting the Hawks lead to one on multiple occasions. Iowa got back ahead by four at 21-17, but ISU was able to knot the set back up at 23-23 when Monique Harris and Grace Lazard teamed for a block. The Cyclones survived an Iowa set point, and then got one of their own when Iowa sent an overpass wide of the line. ISU took advantage, as Claire Sheehan sailed a shot wide to give Iowa State a dramatic third set 26-24.
Set Four: Iowa State 30 Iowa 28
Iowa dominated the first half of the set, jumping out to a 14-6 advantage. The Cyclones finally got some momentum after that as a 4-0 run capped by Miranda's fourth ace of the evening made it a 14-10 Hawkeye edge. Iowa State worked hard to get back into proceedings, as a Coyle mishit cut the Hawk advantage to one at 16-15. Iowa zoomed back ahead by four, but the Cyclones continued to reel it back in, capping it with Miranda's fifth ace at 22-22. ISU fought off five Iowa set points, before ISU brought up match point via a West kill. West came clutch to seal the match, as her 10th kill of the evening locked up the match for ISU at 30-28.

Jess Schaben. An Iowan rose to the occasion on the state's biggest volleyball stage, as the junior All-American finished the night with a match-high 17 kills, along with nine digs and two blocks (one solo and one assist).
