HAMPTON, Va – The Iowa State wrestling team capped off its Virginia Duals with a 25-16 victory over Big 12 foe, Fresno State. The Cyclones posted a 4-1 record on the weekend and won the silver bracket championship.
Iowa State's winning efforts were bolstered by four bonus-point victories, including three by fall. The four bonus-point wins and three pins were the most by the Cyclones in dual competition this season.
How It Happened
Markus Simmons and Kanen Storr put the Cyclones up 12-4 after each of them posted first-period falls. Simmons cradled Trevor Williams up for a pin in 2:29 and Storr rolled Chris Deloza over in 2:05. The win for Storr gave him his fourth win of the weekend and his second by bonus-point margin.
Chase Straw had bookend victories at the Virginia Duals. The latter came against the Bulldogs, as he won by major decision over Greg Gaxiola. The Winthrop, Iowa, native racked up six takedowns in the match and did well on top to ride for 2:32.
At 174 pounds, Hank Swalla won the match in a gritty 5-3 contest against Dominic Kincaid. With under a minute remaining in the third, Swalla trailed Kincaid, 3-1. The redshirt sophomore scored a late takedown to send the match to sudden victory. He went on to score the match-winning takedown in the extra period to take the bout 5-3.
Dane Pestano salted away the Cyclone victory at 184 pounds. The Waimanalo, Hi., native had tallied five takedowns in the contest before he turned Angel Solis and pinned the Bulldog as time expired in the third period.
