AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Jess Schaben has been named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. Schaben is one of 30 women's volleyball players selected as a candidate.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Schaben is one of Iowa State University's top student-athletes in competition and off the court. Schaben, a two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, AVCA All-Region and All-Big 12 First Team selection, is Iowa State's leader in kills with 3.72 per set this season and has amassed 1,260 in her career. She is also second on the squad in digs with 2.77 per set.
Outside of volleyball, Schaben is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection as an Elementary Education major. An active member of Iowa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, this past summer Schaben was one of 10 student-athletes to go on a mission trip to Costa Rica with Soles4Souls.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
