AMES, Iowa – the Iowa State football team was honored by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) as its Reveal Suits National Team of the Week for its performance vs. No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday.
Iowa State knocked off the previously unbeaten Mountaineers in dominating fashion, outgaining WVU, 498-152 in total offense en route it its second-straight victory (30-14) over a top-25 opponent.
Iowa State is 5-2 vs. ranked opponents and has three wins over top-6 teams in the last two years, joining Alabama and Auburn as the only three teams in FBS with a trio of top-6 victories since 2017.
The Cyclone defense came to play, allowing just seven points to a team that was averaging over 40 points heading into the game. The Cyclones only allowed six plays on their side of the field and limited WVU's potent offense to its lowest offensive yardage output since 1995.
Iowa State was again aggressive, tying its school record for sacks in a game with seven for the second week in a row. Six different Cyclones registered a sack, including JaQuan Bailey who registered a pair to give him 15.0 in his career, tying for fourth in school history. He was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
The offense was guided by true freshman QB Brock Purdy, who has accounted for eight of ISU's 10 touchdowns in the last two games. Purdy threw for 254 yards (18-25) and three touchdowns and rushed for 39 yards. He was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second-straight week.
Running back David Montgomery returned from an injury and had one of his best games as a Cyclone, rushing for a career-high 189 yards and a touchdown. It was Montgomery's third-straight 100-yard outing and the 11th of his career.
Wide Receiver Hakeem Butler led the Cyclones with 107 receiving yards on six catches and a touchdown. It was Butler's fourth career 100-yard receiving game and his 14th career TD catch, tying for sixth all-time.
With the score at 20-14 in the fourth quarter, Purdy connected with Deshaunte Jones on a perfect 31-yard touchdown strike to put the game out of reach. It was the 29th-straight game with a reception for Jones, the second-best string in school history.
Iowa State, which received votes in this week's Amway Coaches poll with a 3-3 overall record and 2-2 Big 12 mark, is off this weekend. The Cyclones return to action on Oct. 27 playing host to Texas Tech on Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2.
