AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-10-2, 0-2-1 Big 12) fell 2-1 to No. 13 Texas (10-1-2, 2-1-1 Big 12) on a late Longhorn goal on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones battled the nationally-ranked Longhorns all afternoon, which included a 40-minute lightning delay, but were undone by a goal from Kayra Dollas in the 87th minute.
Sophomore Kassi Ginther provided the highlight of the match, notching her second goal of the season in the 16th minute to equalize after Texas took an early lead.
Turning Point of the Match
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, the Longhorns won possession in their attacking third, and got the ball to the Big 12's leading goal-scorer Cyera Hintzen. The junior forward played a ball for Longhorn teammate Alexa Adams, who then connected a pass to an open Kayra Dollas. Dollas, a senior, squared up and placed a rocket into the upper left corner from 19 yards out for the game-winning goal.
Hintzen ended the match with three points for Texas, converting a beautiful strike from beyond the 18-yard box in the 15th minute to score the first goal of the game, in addition to earning an assist on Dollas' goal.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Kassi Ginther. The sophomore has emerged at the forward position this season, thriving since the Cyclones switched to a 4-4-2 alignment at the start of Big 12 play. Ginther, a forward, played 58 minutes and scored her second goal of the season, while leading Iowa State with two shots on goal. Fellow forward Klasey Medelberg set up the chance by winning a foot race to the end line to play a cross into the middle of the box. The pass pinged off a UT defender, found Ginther's feet and the native of Lee's Summit, Mo., buried it in the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1.
Coach Speak
"I thought we really worked hard and stayed organized, but you just can't give the ball away in that situation," Minatta said. "It's frustrating, but you've got to move forward. They're the No. 13 team in the country and we took them right to the brink, so I'm really proud of the team and the effort they put out there. You just can't give a talented team like Texas chances like that."
