AMES, Iowa – No. 23 Iowa State held off Baylor, 28-14, to win its fifth-consecutive game and earn bowl eligibility for the second-straight season. The Cyclones improve to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 play, while the Bears fall to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
The Cyclones held a 17-0 lead at the end of the first half. ISU's offense scored on each of its three possessions, while Baylor reached the red zone on all three of its possessions before the Cyclones clamped down and held it scoreless.
The first score of the game came on Purdy's 11-yard strike to Deshaunte Jones in the back of the end zone late in the first quarter. ISU added another score on its first drive of the second quarter as Purdy scampered in from two yards out to put the Cyclones up, 14-0. Purdy then led the Cyclones on a drive to end the half and resulted in Connor Assalley connecting on a 34-yard field goal.
Baylor cut into the Cyclone lead in the second half but a Johnnie Lang touchdown run in the closing moments of the third quarter provided enough separation. It was Lang's first career touchdown.
Players of Note…
Purdy managed the game for the Cyclones, completing 18-of-23 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. The freshman signal caller also rushed for 56 yards and a score.
On the defensive side of the ball, Marcel Spears recorded a team-high 10 tackles.
Assalley connected on both of his field goals to improve to 13-for-17 this season.
