AMES, Iowa – Six members of the Iowa State volleyball team were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Four Cyclones earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team in Izzy Enna, Hali Hillegas, Piper Mauck and Jess Schaben. Hannah Bailey and Avery Rhodes earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
Hillegas and Schaben are now both three-time honorees. Hillegas, a redshirt junior from Charles City, Iowa, leads Iowa State with her 4.44 digs per set. She is a two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week in 2018 and her three matches with at least 30 digs on the season are the only three 30-dig matches by Big 12 players this season.
Schaben, a senior from Defiance, Iowa, leads Iowa State with 3.84 kills per set and is second on the team with 2.85 digs per frame. She is also the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after posting a combined 48 kills across ISU's last two matches.
Enna and Mauck are both first-time Academic All-Big 12 honorees. Enna, a sophomore from Kansas City, has been Iowa State's libero each of the past nine matches, averaging 3.75 digs per set in that time. Mauck, a sophomore from Des Moines, is averaging 10.64 assists per set while running the Cyclone offense. She also has six double-doubles to her name on the year.
Bailey and Rhodes are both first-time Academic All-Big 12 honorees. Bailey, a senior from Cameron, Wisconsin, is back after missing nine matches due to a dislocated finger. Bailey has 27 kills and 12 blocks on the year for ISU. Rhodes, a sophomore from Waco, Texas, played nine matches for ISU before seeing her season come to an end due to a hip injury. She had 59 kills and 37 blocks in her limited playing time in 2018.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
