AMES, Iowa – On Senior Night, Grace Lazard put up a historic performance to lead Iowa State to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-22) sweep of Texas Tech Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. ISU finishes the regular season on a 2018-best four-match winning streak to move to 16-13 overall and will finish with a share of third place in the Big 12 at 9-7. TTU falls to 17-13 overall, 6-10 in league play.
Lazard finished the night with 13 kills and no errors on 15 swings for a school-record .867 hitting percentage, breaking ISU assistant coach Jen Malcom's school record for hitting percentage in a match (min. 15 attempts) of .789, set at Creighton in 2008.
Jess Schaben recorded 16 kills at .483 hitting to lead the Cyclone attack. In the back row, Izzy Enna tied her career-high with 19 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 14
Iowa State roared out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back. The Cyclones dominated in all aspects during the first frame. In attack, ISU hit .375 led by six kills on eight swings form Josie Herbst. Behind the service line, ISU got aces from Herbst and Hali Hillegas. In defense, the Cyclones held TTU to .114 hitting, led by three blocks from Candelaria Herrera. Iowa State wrapped up the set when Herbst fired three-straight kills to close the set at 25-14 ISU.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 13
The Cyclones again got off to a fast start, rolling out to a 7-2 lead. However, the Red Raiders did not go away easily, as they stayed within a few points of the home side for the majority of the set. Hillegas' return to behind the service line put ISU out of sight, as she served up a 4-0 run to put the Cyclones ahead 19-11. The Iowa State offense impressed again, hitting .519 for the set led by seven kills on eight swings from Grace Lazard. ISU wrapped up the set when TTU got called in the net on an overpass at 25-13.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 22
The third set played out even to start. While Iowa State was able to hold the lead from 3-2 on, Texas Tech kept the Cyclones close, pulling within one at 12-11. However, Hillegas did the job again from behind the service line, sparking a 6-1 run to move ahead 18-12. The Cyclones were ahead at 22-17, but Texas Tech was able to rally within one at 22-21 on a Brooke Kanas kill. Herrera's kill broke ISU's funk, as the Cyclones got to match point at 24-21. ISU wrapped up the match on second asking when Grace Lazard posted a kill via a Karrington Jones blocking error at 25-22.
Player of the Match
Grace Lazard. The senior from London was a history maker on Senior Night, as she broke Iowa State's school record for hitting percentage in a match, posting 13 kills with no errors on 15 swings at a .867 hitting percentage. She also led the block with five stuffs.
