AMES, Iowa – No. 24 Iowa State overcame sloppy field conditions and a pesky Drake squad to defeat the Bulldogs, 27-24, Saturday afternoon at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones finish the regular season with an 8-4 overall record, tying for the most in the modern era. Drake finishes its season 7-4 overall.
Iowa State tied the school record for most victories at Jack Trice Stadium in a season with its sixth.
Drake took a 24-20 lead with 3:37 remaining on a pass from Grant Kraemer to Devin Cates.
The Cyclones were able to strike back on their next possession as ISU marched 67 yards in 10 plays and 3:05, the drive culminating with Brock Purdy hitting Deshaunte Jones from seven yards out for what proved to be the winning and final score of the game.
The Cyclones led 20-14 at the half behind a pair of touchdown runs from David Montgomery and another from Purdy.
Drake held a 279-273 edge in total offense as the teams played on a soaked and muddy field.
Players of Note…
Montgomery did much of the work for the Cyclones, carrying it a career-high matching 33 times for 145 yards and two scores.
Through the air, Purdy completed 15-of-22 passes for 153 yards. Jones and Hakeem Butler had a team-best four receptions each, with Butler leading the way with 67 yards.
Defensively, Jake Hummel finished with a team-high six tackles. JaQuan Bailey had a late sack that helped secure the victory. He now has 17.5 sacks in his career, which ranks second in school history.

*Montgomery is the first Cyclone to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons since Ennis Haywood (2000-01).
*Brian Peavy had his first interception this season and the sixth of his career.
*Hakeem Butler became ISU's single-season receiving leader with 1,126 yards…he passes Lane Danielsen's 1,073 yards in 2002.
*This is ISU's first season with a 1,000-yard rusher (Montgomery) and receiver (Butler).
