SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 25 Iowa State's second-half rally came up short in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Friday night, as the Cyclones fell 28-26 to No. 12 Washington State. Iowa State concludes its 2018 season with a record of 8-5, while Washington State improves to 11-2.
The Cougars capitalized on a pair of first-quarter Cyclone turnovers to take an early lead. Washington State opened the scoring with a 22-yard pass from Gardner Minshew to Renard Bell with 6:55 to play in the first quarter. The drive was set up after an interception by Marcus Strong gave the Cougars a short field to work with.
Washington State extended the lead to 14-0 on its first drive of the second quarter on a seven-yard rush by Minshew.
Iowa State responded on its ensuing possession, marching 69 yards in four plays to cut the deficit to 14-7. Hakeem Butler hauled in passes of 25 and 36 yards on the drive, which was capped by a nine-yard Brock Purdy scamper into the end zone.
With the Cougars leading 21-7 on a Minshew touchdown pass, the Cyclones drove 42 yards in 1:02 to set up a 50-yard field attempt by Connor Assalley. The sophomore drilled the career-long attempt to make the score 21-10 at halftime.
The Cyclones carried the momentum into the third quarter, opening the stanza with a 7-play, 73-yard drive, capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery. Iowa State's next drive was also productive, ending in a 23-yard field goal by Assalley to cut the Washington State lead to just 21-20 with 1:04 to play in the third quarter.
Washington State stretched the lead to 28-20 on a 10-yard Max Borghi rushing touchdown with 10:24 left in the game. The Cyclones responded late with a 74-yard touchdown drive, as Purdy's second rushing touchdown of the night cut the lead to 28-26. However, Iowa State two-point attempt was unsuccessful and the Cougars held on to win.

Butler was incredible, hauling in nine catches for 192 yards, just six receiving yards shy of the Valero Alamo Bowl record.
David Montgomery ran the ball 26 times for 124 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He also had four catches for 55 yards
Defensively, Marcel Spears led the way, racking up nine tackles, including six solo stops. Spears had 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.
