AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) has qualified for a bowl game for the second-straight season and for the 14th time in school history, accepting an invitation to play in the 2018 Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cyclones will face No. 12 Washington State (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12) Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. CT. ESPN will broadcast the game.
The Cyclones finished the regular season with an 8-4 record and a 6-3 mark in Big 12 play, breaking the school record for conference victories in a season while recording their best conference finish in 40 years (T3rd).
Iowa State is ranked No. 25 in latest AP Top-25 poll, the first time since 1976 the Cyclones were rated in the final regular season poll.
The Cyclones rattled off five-straight conference wins in a season for the first time in school history, including wins over two ranked teams (No. 25 Oklahoma State, No. 6 West Virginia). The win over West Virginia was ISU's third over top-6 team in the last two seasons.
Attendance at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium was thriving in 2018, as ISU recorded its third-best season turnstile total in school history by averaging 56,010 fans per game. The Cyclones boasted a 6-1 record at home, tying the school mark for season wins at Jack Trice Stadium.
It will be Iowa State's first-ever appearance in the Valero Alamo Bowl, which was established in 1993.
Iowa State has an all-time record of 4-9 in bowl games. Third-year head coach Matt Campbell, who was named the 2018 Big 12 Conference Co-Coach of the Year, led the Cyclones to a 21-20 win over No. 19 Memphis in last season's AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn.
