AMES, Iowa – Matt Campbell implored his team to "Trust The Process" when he took over as head football coach prior to the 2016 season.
His players bought into the "Process" and it paid major dividends in 2017, as the Cyclones finished the season at 8-5, defeated a school-record three ranked teams, appeared in the AP Top-25 for the first time since 2005 and won the fourth bowl game in school history with a 21-20 victory over Memphis in the Liberty Bowl.
How the Cyclones respond to success is the next question, and the foundation for a repeat performance begins right now with the opening of spring practice on Wednesday.
ISU must replace important players who were key in helping turn the fortunes around in guys like two-time All-Big 12 receiver Allen Lazard and All-American linebacker Joel Lanning.
The cupboard isn't bare, however. ISU returns nine players on offense who have seven or more career starts, including All-American running back David Montgomery, who rushed for 1,146 yards in 2017.
On defense, ISU returns six starters, but all six earned some sort of All-Big 12 recognition in 2017, including three-time All-Big 12 cornerback Brian Peavy.
The program instituted the slogan "Win In The Dark" for 2018. The concept is simple. Games are won or lost in the offseason when nobody is watching. It's time to go to work.
