AMES, Iowa – Iowa State volleyball head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced the hiring of Fiona Fonoti as the Cyclones' newest assistant coach. Fonoti, who will officially start at ISU on March 12, comes to ISU from a successful background that includes work as a high school and club coach, and as an instructor, all of that following a successful career as a setter at Nebraska.
"I want to thank Christy, and everyone on her staff for welcoming me into the Cyclone volleyball family," Fonoti said. "This opportunity is truly a blessing for me and my family. I am excited to begin this new journey at Iowa State University."
Most recently, Fonoti was an assistant varsity girls coach at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii as well as a personal setter coach at the Elite Setting Academy in Pearl City, Hawaii. Fonoti also spent time coaching in Hawaii at Pearl City High School and McKinley High School. She also spent six years as the head coach for the Lil Spiker Academy.
During her time in Hawaii, Fonoti was also a techer, teaching math and special education at a variety of grades and levels across the past 15 years.
"Fiona is a winner," Johnson-Lynch said. "She had a tremendous career as a student-athlete, and now as a teacher and coach she is beloved by her students and peers in her community. She is the kind of person I want in our program, and I am excited to have Fiona, her husband Chris and the rest of the family join our Cyclone family."
As a player at Nebraska, Fonoti took over the setting duties from Johnson-Lynch after the Cyclone head coach graduated from UNL. Then Fiona Nepo, she became a three-time All-Big 12 First Team and three-time AVCA All-America honoree from 1996-98, culminating in being the Big 12 Player of the Year as well as a finalist for the NCAA Player of the Year and Honda Broderick Awards.
