AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team announced its spring volleyball schedule Friday. The slate features a pair of matches against Big Ten competition, a match against defending Big EAST champions Creighton and a home tournament at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State opens the spring schedule on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. against Creighton. The Jays and Cyclones have faced off in the fall each of the past two seasons, with ISU taking last year's meeting in five sets in Wichita, Kansas over the then-No. 8 Bluejays. Creighton returns plenty of talent from its squad which reached the NCAA Second round last season in honorable mention All-America libero Brittany Witt and 2016 honorable mention All-Americans Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters.
The Cyclones lone appearance in Hilton Coliseum for Spring 2018 comes on Saturday, April 7, when ISU hosts the Iowa State Volleyball Spring Tournament. Admission is free, doors open to the public at 9:30 a.m. and competition starts at 10 a.m. This year's competition will be Drake and Wayne State. The full schedule will be announced at a later date.
ISU will close out the spring schedule against a pair of Big Ten opponents. The first comes on Friday, April 13 when ISU makes the trip to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Bond Shymansky's squad just missed out on last season's NCAA Volleyball Championship, and returns four starters in 2018 to resume those efforts. The Cyclones and Hawkeyes played an instant classic in Iowa City last season, with ISU fighting off five Iowa set points to win in four sets.
The spring slate closes on Friday, April 20 against Illinois at Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa at 7:30 p.m. The Fighting Illini advanced to last season's Sweet 16 by going to Seattle and knocking off No. 8 Washington. Chris Tamas' Illini were a young squad last season, with six starters returning for the 2018, led by AVCA Third Team All-Americans Ali Bastianelli and Jordyn Poulter.
Iowa State is coming off a 22-7 season and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship, the Cyclones' 12th-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Cyclones have a small squad for spring activities, with only nine players on the roster. AVCA Honorable Mention All-America libero Hali Hillegas will be limited in the spring after a pair of off-season operations.
ISU returns a trio of starting hitters in two-time honorable mention All-American Jess Schaben, and middle blockers Grace Lazard and Avery Rhodes.
