IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State's trip to Carver-Hawkeye Arena was once again a success as the Cyclones defeated Iowa 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21) Friday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Jess Schaben led the ISU effort with 19 kills, while Josie Herbst has 12 and Hannah Bailey and Grace Lazard had 10 each. Herbst led ISU at the net with four blocks, while the Cyclones served seven aces, two each from Izzy Enna and Piper Mauck.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Iowa 19
Iowa's block put pressure on the Cyclone attack early, building up a 5-1 lead to start the match, but ISU quickly erased it and tied it up at 6-6 on a Grace Lazard kill. The lead changed multiple times in the frame, Iowa State moved ahead at 10-9, Iowa got ahead again at 13-12, and ISU found its way back ahead at 14-13. The Cyclones got a strong period of serving from Izzy Enna that finally gave ISU some breathing room, as a couple of UI overpasses helped the visitors get ahead 22-17. Iowa State wrapped up the first set when Schaben fired off the top of the block at 25-19.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Iowa 23
Iowa State's serving helped give the Cyclones some separation, with Piper Mauck and Izzy Enna each recording aces which helped ISU build up a 13-8 lead. The Cyclones were their own worst enemy, as three-straight errors helped the Hawkeyes knot up the second at 15-15. Iowa pulled ahead for the first time in the set at 17-16, which ballooned up to 20-17. Lazard and Schaben combined for a block to tie the set back up at 21-21, and then Lazard teamed with Hannah Bailey to put the Cyclones back ahead 22-21. Lazard then went to offense, going with back-to-back kills on the slide to lock up the second frame 25-23.
Set Three: Iowa 25 Iowa State 17
ISU got out to the early lead, but Iowa stormed back to take the lead at 10-7, struggling to get the jump-serve of Meghan Buzzerio out of rotation. The Cyclones were in a 14-8 hole, but were able to string together some points to cut the Hawkeye lead to 15-13. However, Iowa was able to respond again from behind the service line to get its advantage back to six at 19-13. The Hawkeyes wrapped up the third set when Cali Hoye killed down the line at 25-17 UI.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Iowa 21
Both teams showed great hustle and determination as the match wore on. The Cyclones were able to find some separation from behind the service line. As aces from Lazard and Schaben helped build a 16-13 lead. The Hawkeyes held tough, doing well to mix up the attack and keep the Cyclones within grasp. Schaben made some crucial plays on both sides of the ball to help ISU move ahead by six at 23-17. Iowa State closed out the night when Josie Herbst killed from the back row at 25-21.

Iowa State closes out the spring season next Friday against Illinois in Bettendorf, Iowa at Bettendorf High School. First serve between the Cyclones and Fighting Illini will be at 7:30 p.m.
