Set One: Iowa State 25 Illinois 20
Outside of ties at 2-2 and 3-3, Iowa State led the frame the whole way. The first set stood out for defense, as both teams were strong at the net and in the back court, with the point that Illinois won at 16-13 Iowa State being the highlight, as both teams showed tremendous determination to keep the point alive. The Cyclones closed out the set on the second asking, taking the first 25-20.
Set Two: Illinois 28 Iowa State 26
Behind the serve of
Jess Schaben, Iowa State went on a big 9-2 run to open up the set. Like in the first set, Illinois slowly worked their way back in to cut down at the Cyclones' big lead. The Illinois comeback was left to very late in the set, as the Cyclones got to set point at 24-21. Illinois fought off those three and two more to knot the set back up at 26-26. The Illini got their first set point at 27-26, and did not let it go to waste, converting it to knot the match up at one set each.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Illinois 19
The Cyclones got the first four points of the set and never looked back. Once again, it was Schaben who helped inspire the serving, as she was also behind the wheel for the Cyclones mid-set 5-0 run that made it 15-9 Cyclones. There was no late drama in this one, as the Cyclones converted the set on the first asking at 25-19.
Set Four: Illinois 25 Iowa State 21
This time it was Illinois who made the breakaway early, getting ahead 6-2, but the Cyclones were quick to reel UI back in by tying it at 7-7. Illinois showed their quality from there, going on a 4-0 run to get back ahead and eventually establish a 18-12 lead.
Grace Lazard's trip behind the service line was a successful one, as she helped power a 7-0 Iowa State run that put the Cyclones in front at 19-18. The Illini's serving game helped steer them to the set, as they recorded a trio of late aces, including one at set point, gave Illinois the set 25-21.
