AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men's basketball assistant coach Daniyal Robinson recently attended the NCAA Basketball Champion Forum in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The third annual Champion Forum, which was held May 7-9, was an exclusive opportunity for Robinson with only 10 current assistant coaches invited to participate.
The forum included speakers that ranged from athletics directors to university presidents to search firm representatives. The attendees also had video interviews critiqued and went through simulated interviews in an effort to prepare them for the real thing.
For Robinson, who is in the fourth season of his second stint at Iowa State, it was an eye-opening and valuable experience.
"It was valuable to be able to take in so much information," Robinson said. "From learning about the mindset of a head coach, with the number of responsibilities a head coach has. It really becomes a wow moment. There are just so many responsibilities, but when you focus on having a CEO mentality you really understand how all of your decisions affect other people and your program. It was a great experience for me."
Among the speakers Robinson and his peers heard from, there was a common theme in their address.
"You heard the words authentic and alignment," Robinson said. "Be aligned with your core values and those of your university and athletics department. Your staff needs to be aligned and your players need to buy into what you want to do.
"They also really stressed being authentic. There are so many pressure situations that come up that the real you is going to come out in times of adversity and times of success. Be aware of who you are."
Robinson has been an assistant coach for the past 18 years and for him it all comes back to one thing.
"I love working with the guys," said the Rock Island, Illinois native. "I have always wanted to coach. I've always been interested in finding out why we do certain things on the court and off."
He has learned a lot by watching a couple important people in his life.
"I looked up to my big brother," Robinson says. "He and my high school coach, Duncan Reid, were great influences on me. Coach Reid did stuff beyond basketball that really helped me. He held us accountable off the court and talked about our basketball team being the pride of the community. That is something I have always remembered. This game gave me a chance to get an education so I know what it can do for people."
For now, Robinson continues to learn the tricks of the trade at Iowa State.
"I've been fortunate enough to work for great coaches," Robinson said. "Guys that will give you great responsibility. Coach Prohm gives us a ton of responsibility and that allows you to grow in many different areas. He's very approachable and you can have a back-and-forth conversation with him and that certainly helps in your professional development."
