AMES, Iowa – Iowa State fell to Iowa 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20) Friday night in front of a season-high 3,900 fans at Hilton Coliseum. The loss drops ISU to 7-5 on the year, while Iowa is now 6-3. The 3,900 fans marks the eighth-largest home crowd for Iowa State in program history.
With the win, Iowa moves ahead 5-2 in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series through three events.
On the night, Jess Schaben paced ISU with a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Grace Lazard notched 11 kills, while Josie Herbst finished with a career-best 11 kills. In the back-row, Hali Hillegas had 17 digs, while Izzy Enna had 10 to go with two aces.
The Cyclone offense was held to a .181 hitting percentage, and was hampered by 13 service errors.
Set One: Iowa 25 Iowa State 20
Iowa State and Iowa exchanged the lead at multiple points throughout the first set, with each team posting 3-0 runs to get ahead or knot the set back up. A sloppy first set behind the service line hurt the Cyclones, who could not take advantage of their attacking advantage. Iowa got ahead by four at 22-18 and reached set point at 24-20 on a Brie Orr kill. Iowa got ahead 1-0 when Cali Hoye put down a kill at 25-20.
Set Two: Iowa 25 Iowa State 21
The Hawkeyes kept the momentum going to start the frame, racing out to a 6-2 lead. UI kept rolling, as the lead was expanded to 12-5 when Schaben was stuffed by Hannah Clayton and Reghan Coyle. The Cyclones made a comeback, going on a 7-1 run to knot the set at 15-15. However, Iowa went on a subsequent 3-0 run to get back ahead for good at 18-15. The Hawkeyes got to set point at 24-19, and despite ISU fighting off the first two set points, Iowa moved ahead 2-0 when Reghan Coyle killed at 25-21.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Iowa 23
ISU went on an early 4-0 run to get ahead early, but the Hawkeyes got back into it and moved ahead at 10-9. The two teams traded shots and leads throughout the set, but it was the Hawkeyes who were eventually able to pull ahead with a 5-1 run to 20-17. UI got up four at 22-18, but ISU went on a 5-0 run to move ahead 23-22 on a Lazard solo block. ISU got to set point on a Josie Herbst kill at 24-23, and put it away when Hoye fired wide at 25-23.
Set Four: Iowa 25 Iowa State 20
The momentum did not stay with the Cyclones as multiple errors allowed the visitors to get ahead 6-1. The Cyclones worked their way back into the contest, tying it at 11-11 on a Lazard kill. ISU knotted it again at 12-12, but Iowa went on a 5-1 run to get ahead 17-14. The Hawkeyes would not be brought back this time, as they reached match point at 24-20 and put it away on the first try with a Taylor Louis kill.
