AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's David Montgomery posted his ninth career 100-yard rushing game and Hakeem Butler had another strong performance at wide receiver, finishing with six catches for 88 yards, as the Cyclones outlasted Akron, 26-13, to earn their first win of the season Saturday at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. With the win, Iowa State improves to 1-2 overall. Akron falls to 2-1 this season.
The Cyclones took a 17-10 lead into the half after a one-yard plunge from David Montgomery with 0:30 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Akron struck first in the half on a 26-yard touchdown reception by Andre Williams. The Cyclones answered right back with Butler's 24-yard reception from Noland and the teams traded field goals in the middle of the second quarter.
The second half was the Connor Assalley show as the Iowa State kicker connected on three field goals and proved to be the difference in the game.
Players of Note…
Butler and Montgomery did the majority of the work offensively for the Cyclones. Butler scored his third touchdown in the last two weeks, while Montgomery also got into the end zone once and tallied 107 yards on the ground. It was Montgomery's ninth career 100-yard rushing game.
Noland was 26-of-34 passing for 233 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Cyclones had four sacks and tallied 10 tackles for a loss. JaQuan Bailey was all over the place with 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss. Lawrence White had a career-high nine tackles.
Assalley went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts of 27, 29, 33 and 37 yards to improve to 7-for-7 in his first season as the Cyclone kicker.

*Kene Nwangwu had his sixth career kickoff return…his 47-yard return in the first half set up the Cyclones first score of the game.
*Butler had a reception for the 18th consecutive game…his touchdown reception was the 12th of his career, tying him with Willie Jones and Dick Limerick for the eighth most in school history.
*Bailey has 12.0 sacks in his career, tied for the eighth-most in school history.
