AMES, Iowa – Iowa State volleyball's Jen Malcom has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, Christy Johnson-Lynch announced Tuesday. Malcom has been an assistant coach on Johnson-Lynch's staff for the last three seasons.
"Jen Malcom has been a critical part of our success over the years as a player and now as a coach," Johnson-Lynch said. "She is a tremendously proud alum, and is driven to make Iowa State Volleyball the best it can be. She is one of the best assistant coaches in the country, and I am thrilled to promote her to Associate Head Coach in recognition of her hard work and commitment."
Malcom has been imperative in improving the Cyclones' defense at the net, with Iowa State ranking in the top-two of the Big 12 and top-20 of the NCAA the past two seasons in blocks per set. Her work with ISU's hitters helped lead the Cyclones to a .253 team hitting percentage in 2018, the third-best in program history.
The 2018 season put Malcom's ability to develop middle blockers to the test, with the Cyclones using seven different middle blockers throughout the campaign. Candelaria Herrera's progress saw her earn NIVC All-Tournament Team honors to end the season, while Hannah Bailey's move to MB for the final three matches was crucial to keeping the Cyclones' NIVC title run going.
Malcom's time in Ames began as a player from 2006-08, a career for which she still hold ISU's school record for career hitting percentage, before entering the coaching ranks. She worked at Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Arkansas State before returning to Ames in January 2016.
