AMES, Iowa -- The regular season concluded for the Iowa State men's cross country team on Friday afternoon at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. There they finished fourth as a team, led by a first-place finish from Edwin Kurgat. The USTFCCCA announced its new National Rankings and the Cyclones have moved up to No. 5 nationally.
The field at the Nuttycombe was one of the best in the nation this season. 20 out of the top-30 teams nationally were all in competition and the Thomas Zimmerman Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. ISU's fourth-place finish tied for the best by an Iowa State squad at the Nuttycombe Invitational.
For the second this season, Kurgat doubled up as the USTFCCCA National Male Athlete of the Week and the Big 12 Men's Runner of the Week. It marked the first time since 2016 that the same male runner has been named National Athlete of the Week twice in the same cross country season. It is Kurgat's second Big 12 Runner of the Week honor this season and the third of his career.
Head coach Martin Smith's team now turns to the postseason slate, which starts at the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas on Nov. 2. Race-time is set for 10 a.m. for the men, followed by 11 a.m. for the women. This year's Big 12 Cross Country Championships will be available thought Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
