CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams will be looking to defend their Big 12 titles in 2019. The ISU men enter the postseason ranked No. 5 nationally, while the women sit just outside the national rankings.
2. Last season, both teams were victorious at the conference championship for the second season in a row. It was the women's seventh Big 12 title in the last eight seasons and the men's second Big 12 title. It was the first time that the men have won back-to-back conference titles since the 1993-94 seasons.
3. Along with both the Big 12 team titles, the Cyclones also return both the men's Individual champion, Edwin Kurgat, and the women's individual champion, Cailie Logue.
4. The men ran in two regular season events in loaded fields at the John McNichols Invitational and the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. They took third at the John McNichols and fourth at the Nuttycombe.
5. Individually, Kurgat won both of the regular season races. Kurgat was named the USTFCCCA National Male Athlete of the Week and the Big 12 Men's Runner of the Week on both occasions.
6. It is the first time that a male cross country runner had been named National Athlete of the week twice during the same cross country season since 2016. Kurgat is also the first male Iowa State student-athlete to be named a National Athlete of the Week. It is the second and third time that he's been named Big 12 Runner of the Week of his career.
7. Martin Smith's lineup looks a lot different in 2019. The additions of transfers Addison Dehaven, David Too and Mitchell Day, along with the reentrance of Thomas Pollard into the lineup have given the Cyclones an uptick this season.
8. The Big 12 announced its Academic All-Big 12 honorees on Thursday morning. Milo Greder, Jeffery Pedersen, Thomas Pollard and Jared Schuckman were all First Team recipients. Pedersen and Schuckman were two of just six male cross country athletes to record a 4.0 GPA.
