AMES, Iowa – The No. 12 Iowa State wrestling team opened the 2019-20 season with the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open. The Cyclones received championship performances from Alex Mackall (125, Open), Todd Small (133, Open), Chase Straw (165, Open), Gannon Gremmel (285, Open), Grant Stotts (157, Fresh/Soph) and Tate Battani (174, Fresh/Soph).
In total, 27 Cyclones finished in the top-six in their respective weight across the Open and Freshman/Sophomore divisions.
Finals Matches
Open Division
At 125 pounds, Mackall squared off with UNI's Jacob Schwarm. Schwarm jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on two first-period takedowns. Mackall reversed Schwarm to close out the first period to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Mackall opened the second period with another reversal and turned Schwarm for two back points to take a 7-4 lead. Mackall dominated the top position for the remainder of the match, turning Schwarm several more times before ousting the Panther by 19-4 technical fall.
Small faced Northwestern's Colin Valdiviez in the 133-pound finals. Small connected on two first-period takedowns and led 4-2 after one period of action. Valdiviez chose top in both the second and third periods, and did well to ride Small. Late in the third, Small was able to reverse Valdiviez to win by 6-4 decision.
The 165-pound finals pitted Straw and teammate Isaac Judge against one another. It was a knockdown, drag out match between the two Cardinal and Gold grapplers, but a first-period takedown for Straw and riding time proved to be the difference in his 4-2 victory over Judge.
Gremmel squared off against a familiar foe in UNI's Carter Isley. In last year's Iowa State vs. UNI dual, Isley got the better of Gremmel. At the Cyclone Open though, it was Gremmel who bested Isley by 3-1 decision to claim the title at heavyweight.
Jarrett Degen, Marcus Coleman and Sam Colbray all reached the finals at their weight classes, but ultimately came up short and finished second place.
Freshman/Sophomore Division
Iowa State had a load of young wrestlers who competed in the freshman/sophomore division at the Cyclone Open. Stotts (165) and Battani (174) both claimed first place in their brackets.
Charlie Klepps, Nolan Harsh and Julien Broderson all reached the finals as well, but finished runner-up at their respective weights.
Next Up
The Cyclones open the 2019-20 dual slate next Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. with a contest against Bucknell in Hilton Coliseum. That dual will be available through Cyclones.TV and FloWrestling. You can purchase tickets to the dual in the link above.
