STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 5 Iowa State men's cross country team has advanced to its fourth consecutive NCAA Championships with a second-place team finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The Cyclones (54) were edged by team champion, Tulsa (37).
Senior All-American Edwin Kurgat continued his dominant season on the course, capturing his second-straight NCAA Midwest Regional title. Kurgat finished the 10K course in 30:38.3, four seconds ahead of second-place Thomas George of Missouri.
It was a total team effort for the Cyclones. In total, six Iowa State runners earned All-Region honors with top-25 finishes. ISU also stayed patient in a tough field. At the 3K mark, Iowa State sat in ninth, but strategically made its way to the front.
David Too, Chad Johnson and Milo Greder all posted top-15 finishes at the Regional Championships. Too took 10th in 31:07.8, Johnson crossed the finish line in 31:11.7 for 12th and Greder finished right on Johnson's heals in 31:13.5 for 13th.
Thomas Pollard and Mitchell Day were Iowa State's final two All-Region performers. Pollard posted a top-20 finish with an 18th-place performance in 31:19.0. Pollard was followed by Day who took 24th in 31:31.2. Addison Dehaven finished just off the medal stand, taking 29th individually in 31:39.1.
Next Up
Iowa State has advanced to the NCAA Championships for the fourth-straight season. The Cyclones will compete in the national finals next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Nov. 23. The men's 10k race will follow the women's race at 11:15 a.m. CT.
