Ames, Iowa – The USTFCCCA announced its regional award winners today. The Cyclones swept the Athlete of the Year Awards as Senior Edwin Kurgat was named the recipient of the Bill Bergan Award (Midwest Men's Athlete of the Year) and junior Cailie Logue was named the Midwest Women's Athlete of the Year.
The 2018-19 Gary Thompson Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year adds yet another accolade to his already crowded trophy case. Kurgat is a two-time recipient of the Bill Bergan Award, given out annually to the Midwest Region's top performing male athlete. The Eldoret, Kenya, native most recently captured his second-straight NCAA Midwest Regional title, which was proceeded by his second-straight individual Big 12 Championship.
During the regular season, Kurgat won the John McNichols Invitational, as well as the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. On both occasions he was named the USTFCCCA National Male Athlete of the Week, as well as the Big 12 Men's Runner of the Week. It's the first time since 2016 that a male cross country runner has been named National Male Athlete of the Week twice during the same cross country season.
Logue is also now a two-time Midwest Athlete of the Year performer. She successfully defended her individual Midwest Regional title last Friday and started the postseason with a second-consecutive individual Big 12 crown. Logue is just the third runner in Big 12 history to repeat as the individual champion and the first Cyclone to achieve that mark.
The Erie, Kan., native anchored the women's lineup in 2019. She finished eighth individually at the Joe Piane Invite, and 25th at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. She was named the Big 12 Women's Runner of the Week following her performance at the Joe Piane Invitational.
The No. 5 Iowa State men, along with Logue as an individual, have qualified for the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships this Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6k championship race begins at 10:15 CT, followed by the men's 10k championship race at 11:15 CT. The NCAA Championships will be streamed live on FloTrack.
