AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's basketball team (6-4, 0-0 Big 12) fell to Iowa (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) by a final score of 84-68.
All-Big 12 sophomore Tyrese Haliburton was the Cyclones' leading scorer in the contest, scoring 22 points on the night.
How It Happened
The Hawkeyes came out red hot, hitting their first three three-pointers of the contest, and jumped out to an early 18-4 lead. Iowa's hot shooting coupled with Iowa State's cold offensive start put the Cyclones in an early hole.
Iowa State shot 11-32 in the first half and was 2-13 from downtown. Despite their shooting woes, the Cyclones hit their final three field goals to close out the half and trailed 39-24 after 20 minutes of action.
Out of the break, the Iowa State offense came to life. Iowa State hit its first five field goals of the second half and cut the Iowa lead to 44-37. The Hawkeye offense also got hot again, hitting 4-6 from deep to begin the second half and the Iowa lead was quickly back up to 60-43, forcing a Steve Prohm timeout.
Iowa kept their foot on the gas, extending its lead to as many as 25 in the second half. The Cyclones would scrap back, cutting the Hawkeye advantage down to as little as 12 points on a number of occasions, but were not able to get over the hump to complete the comeback.
Player Of Note
Tyrese Haliburton was Iowa State's leading scorer in the contest. He poured in 22 points on 10-17 shooting. It's the third time this season that Haliburton has eclipsed the 20-point scoring margin. He also pulled down five rebounds and churned out a game-high five assists.
Next Up
