AMES, Iowa – The No. 24 Iowa State men's track and field team will have four entries at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Alabama. The Cyclones will be represented by two-time Big 12 Indoor champ Edwin Kurgat (5,000m run), Andrew Jordan (3,000m run) the distance medley relay team of Festus Lagat, Eric Fogltanz, Roshon Roomes and Dan Curts and Vlad Pavlenko (weight throw).
Kurgat is ISU's first NCAA Indoor qualifier at 5K since Daniel Everett in 2016. The Cyclone junior will come into the meet as one of the top competitors, as he is coming off a sweep of the 3,000 and 5,000-meter titles at the Big 12 Indoor Championships last weekend. Kurgat became the first Cyclone to do the conference 3K/5K sweep since 1992. He comes into the meet as the No. 4 seed after running 13:34.54 at the Iowa State Classic, breaking ISU's 28-year old school record in the process. Kurgat is a two-time All-American in Cross Country and earned First Team All-America honors outdoors in track and field last June at 5,000-meters.
Jordan qualified for his first NCAA Track & Field Championships as a Cyclone as the No. 13 seed in the 3,000-meter run via his 7:51.29 he ran at the UW Invitational in January. Jordan will enter the national championships in strong form, finishing fifth at 5,000-meters and fourth at 3,000 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The men's DMR squad of Festus Lagat, Eric Fogltanz, Rosohn Roomes and Dan Curts added their names to the NCAA itinerary when the quartet finished in 9:27.73 (converted from 9:35.44 for track size) at the JDL DMR Invitational to earn the No. 6 seed at the Indoor National Championships. This will be Fogltanz and Roomes' third NCAA track trips, as both ran in the 4x400m at the 2017 NCAA Indoors and 2018 NCAA Outdoors. This will be a first-time trip for Curts and Lagat. ISU last made NCAA Indoors in the DMR in 2015, when Edward Kemobi, Brandon Barnes, Patrick Peterson and Christian DeLago finished third.a
Pavlenko will also be making his first trip to an NCAA Track & Field Championships and is the first Cyclone since Zac Brouilette in 2009 to make it to nationals in the weight throw. The Cyclone senior and team captain has been busy constantly changing the ISU record board this season, as he took down his own school record in the event on three different occasions, the most recent coming at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships. In Lubbock last weekend, Pavlenko ripped a best of 71-8 3/4 to get the Big 12 silver medal and the No. 13 seed in Birmingham in two weeks.
