LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Iowa State women's basketball senior guard Bridget Carleton was named a top-15 finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, becoming the first Cyclone to be named a finalist for the honor. Carleton has earned a spot on the National Ballot for the Award, making her eligible for being named National Player of the Year.
Carleton, who is on the heels of being named Big 12 Player of the Year, is leading the Big 12 with 21.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Carleton has the Cyclones ranked No. 19 in the AP poll, and averaged 20.0 or more points against every Big 12 opponent. Carleton is also named a Cheryl Miller Award Top-10 Finalist, Naismith Trophy Midseason list, Wade Trophy and a Senior CLASS Award finalist.
The Chatham, Ontario, Canada, native also ranks second in Iowa State history with 2,040 career points, while her 17.1 points per game scoring average sits in first in school history. Carleton also ranks third in blocked shots (118), fourth in steals (200), third in free-throw percentage (85.4) and fourth in free throws made (438).
Voting will take place from March 19th to March 26th, and voters take into consideration a player's entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation's top five players and the finalists for the Wooden Award, which is widely considered the most prestigious honor in college basketball, will be announced following the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament and will be the focus of a 30-minute show on April 3rd on ESPNU at 6:30pm ET.
The 43rd annual presentation of the John R. Wooden Award to the men's and women's most outstanding college basketball player will be the anchor presentation of the ESPN College Basketball Awards Presented by Wendy's on ESPN2 on Friday, April 12, 2019.
