CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State went unbeaten at the UNI Spring Tournament Saturday morning at the UNI Wellness/Recreation Center. The Cyclones defeated Western Illinois 2-0, while playing out 1-1 draws with hosts UNI and Iowa.
Match No. 1: Iowa State 1 UNI 1 (25-18, 23-25)
The first set was controlled by the Cyclones the whole way, as ISU showed strength in all areas. A strong serving run from Brooke Andersen helped open up the Cyclone lead to 18-11, which would not be overturned. ISU wrapped up the set when UNI's set landed on the wrong side of the net and out-of-bounds at 25-18.
Putting Jenna Brandt in to set for Piper Mauck did nothing to slow the ISU attack early, as the Cyclones raced out to a 7-1 lead. The Panthers were able to work their way back into the set, tying things back up at 19-19 and getting their first lead of the set on a block at 22-21. Andersen's pushover kill tied it at 22-22 but UNI got to set point first at 24-22. Brandt saved a set point with a setter dump but Candelaria Herrera's shot went wide to make honors even.
Match No. 2: Iowa State 1 Iowa 1 (25-27, 25-19)
The second Cy-Hawk meeting in as many weekends saw a back and forth battle for the first frame. The Cyclone block gave ISU an edge, as back-to-back stuffs put ISU ahead 21-19. However, hitting errors helped move Iowa in the lead at 22-21. Rhodes and Andersen each got kills to tie it up again at 23-23, but Iowa got to set point first. Andersen got kills to help hold off set point twice but Iowa put it away on the third asking at 27-25.
ISU got three blocks on the first three points of the second, but Iowa countered with a 4-0 run to get back in front. Five of Iowa State's first seven points came by way of the block in the frame. The Cyclones got some breathing room in the middle of the frame, as Eleanor Holthaus killed to make it 15-11. Holthaus continued to be dangerous on the left and out of the back row, as ISU opened its lead to six points. Set point came at 24-18 and was finished when Holthaus got one from the right side at 25-19.
Match No. 3: Iowa State 2 Western Illinois 0
ISU racked up the first four points of the first set and did not look back. The Cyclone attack was strong, getting Herrera and Rhodes more involved in the middle as the lead got up to eight early at 13-5. Iowa State reached set point at 24-14 and got the set wrapped up when WIU fired long at 25-15.
Rhodes got two aces as part of a 6-0 run to start the second. The run also saw the Cyclone block rack up three blocks to start the frame. The Leathernecks brought ISU back within one at 8-7, but Herrera killed to swing the momentum back to Iowa State. With aces by Brandt and Holthaus later in the frame, the Cyclones finished the set with four from behind the service line. The Cyclones led by as many as 11 points in second set, with match point arriving at 24-13. Holthaus wrapped things up with a kill at 25-14.

Iowa State will close out the spring schedule next weekend with a pair of matches at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will host Missouri at 10 a.m. and UNI at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
