URBANDALE, Iowa - Iowa State (6-11, 2-7 Big 12) picked up its first win over Baylor (8-20, 2-7 Big 12) in school history Sunday afternoon at the Life Time Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa. The Cyclones downed the Lady Bears 4-3 to send the seniors out with a win on senior day.
The win marked Iowa State's first-ever win over a Big 12 school from the state of Texas, a streak that spanned 96 matches prior to today.
"These kinds of wins are going to be a staple here," assistant coach Kenna Kilgo said. "A lot of teams overlooked us this year and this just shows the world that we're here and we're coming for you."
During the match, Annabella Bonadonna broke Iowa State's career overall wins record, picking up her 158th and 159th career victories against Baylor. The senior also has the least amount of losses of anyone in the top 10 of the list.
Maty Cancini rounded out a perfect weekend with two more wins today, including an upset victory over No. 61 Livia Kraus. She took down Texas' No. 29 Bianca Turati on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa State fell in the No. 1 doubles match, but claimed the No. 2 and 3 matches to clinch the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
The doubles pairs of Cancini/Bonadonna and Margarita Timakova/Ekaterina Repina both had perfect weekends against Texas and Baylor.
Cancini made quick work of No. 61 Kraus, defeating the Lady Bear, 6-0, 6-2 to give Iowa State an early 2-0 lead.
Baylor would win the No. 2 and No. 6 singles matches to draw even with the Cyclones, but Grib would put Iowa State back in front. She downed Paula Baranano, 6-1, 6-4 to give the Cyclones a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining.
Bonadonna willed herself to victory over Dominika Sujova. Sujova lead 4-1 in the first set, but Bonadonna came from behind to take it 6-4. Bonadonna clinched the record-setting victory by winning 6-4 in the second set.
