AMES, Iowa – Iowa State made its first appearance of the spring at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, taking on Iowa. The Cyclones fell to the Hawkeyes 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 15-25).
Leading the way for Iowa State was Eleanor Holthaus, who had 10 kills, while Brooke Andersen had nine and Meegan Hart posted eight. In the back row, Jenna Brandt had a double-double of 28 assists and 14 digs, while Taylor Baranski notched 13 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Iowa 22
Iowa State was strong the whole way, as the Cyclones went on an early 5-0 run to get ahead 9-3. The Hawkeyes came back with a 4-0 run to cut the ISU lead to two, but the home team was able to run off a 5-1 run, with three kills coming from Brooke Andersen. The Hawkeyes cut the Cyclone lead to two again at 19-17 but ISU was able to pull away and lock up the first on a Courtney Buzzerio attacking error at 25-22 Cyclones.
Set Two: Iowa 25 Iowa State 22
The Cyclones rushed out to a 5-0 lead, but it was quickly erased by a 5-0 run from Iowa. The Cyclones were ahead 9-7, but the Hawkeyes racked up a 7-1 run to push ahead 14-10. The Cyclones cut the UI advantage to one at 14-13 and 16-15, but ISU would not get any closer as Iowa went on a 4-0 run to pull away for good. The Cyclones held off three set points, but Iowa sealed the set on a Griere Hughes kill at 25-22.
Set Three: Iowa 25 Iowa State 18
Iowa got out to a big advantage at 13-5, but the Cyclones were able to rally and cut the Hawkeye lead to a pair at 14-12. However, the Cyclone serve and pass broke down as Iowa went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 22-12. Iowa recorded six aces in the set while hitting .310 as a team, and holding ISU to .143 hitting for the frame. The Hawkeyes moved ahead 2-1 when Meghan Buzzerio killed at 25-18.
Set Four: Iowa 25 Iowa State 15
The Hawkeyes were strong again out of the gate, running out to a 5-1 lead. ISU knotted it up at 7-7, but the visitors went on a 6-1 run to get ahead for good at 13-8. The Cyclone attack struggled again, hitting -.065 for the set, while Iowa hit .310. The Hawkeyes wrapped up the set when C. Buzzerio got a kill at 25-15, UI.

Iowa State heads to Cedar Falls next Saturday for the UNI Spring Tournament, where the Cyclones will take on the host Panthers (9 a.m.), Iowa (10 a.m.) and North Dakota State (11 a.m.) at the Wellness and Recreation Center on the campus of UNI.
