AMES, Iowa – John Walters caught up with Iowa State 2019 Hall of Fame inductee Don Wengert. Wengert, is the winningest (22) pitcher in Iowa State history and a two-time (1991-92) All-Big Eight selection.
The native of Sioux City, Iowa, pitched a school-record 291.1 innings pitched with 190 strikeouts (No. 2 at ISU). He was a fourth-round pick in the 1992 MLB Draft by Oakland and played seven years in the majors (1995-01), winning 14 games and striking out 226 batters. Wengert was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
