LIMA, Peru – Iowa State bounced back from two sets down to finish its match against the Peru U20 National Team in a 2-2 tie (18-25, 19-25, 29-27, 16-14) Saturday night at the Peru Volleyball Federation Academy.
The Cyclones' comeback in the match was keyed by a huge serving run from freshman Michal Schuler, who brought ISU back from 24-19 down in the third with four aces to help win the frame. Schuler helped lead the Cyclones to 10 aces on the night. In attack, freshman Annie Hatch led the way, while another freshman in Kenzie Mantz posted a team-high four blocks.
Set One: Peru 25 Iowa State 18
Iowa State got the first three points of the set and match, but Peru rebounded to take the lead at 7-6. The Peruvians continued to press their advantage as their lead expanded to 14-9, and then to six points at 16-10. Iowa State was able to rally back within three at 16-13 and 19-16, but there would not be a path back into the set. Peru locked up the first when Eleanor Holthaus hit into the net at 25-18.
Set Two: Peru 25 Iowa State 19
Again, the Cyclones enjoyed a strong start to the set, as a Josie Herbst ace made it 4-2 to the visitors. As the patterns went, it did not take long for Las Hijas del Sol to work their way back ahead, as they opened up a 10-6 advantage. This time, Iowa State had a response, as the Cyclones used a 3-0 run to get back within one at 12-11. Two momentum swings saw Peru move back ahead 18-13, but Iowa State roar back to get within one at 19-18, but the Peruvians were able to swing the momentum one last time to take the set. Peru moved ahead 2-0 when the setter dumped for a kill at 25-19.
Set Three: Iowa State 29 Peru 27
Peru claimed the first five points of the set to put the Cyclones in a more challenging postion. The visitors did not find any route into the set until a 3-0 run made it 18-16. Peru responded to get ahead 22-16, but Iowa State put up a late resistance with three Michal Schuler aces tying the frame at 24-24, and a fourth bringing up a set point. Peru survived two Cyclone set points, but ISU finally put it away with a block from Holthaus and Avery Rhodes at 29-27.
Set Four: Iowa State 16 Peru 14
The Cyclones kept rolling in the fourth, as the attack brought some power to get ahead 6-4. A tough battle ensued, but Iowa State was up for it and eventually got ahead by three at 11-8. Peru fought back to knot it at 14-14, but ISU got to set point first and the block locked up the final frame at 16-14 Cyclones.

Iowa State will play the final match of its tour tomorrow against a Peru Junior National Team at 6 p.m. from the samde site as today's match, the Peru Volleyball Federation Academy. Once again, there will be no live stream, but a replay of the match will be uploaded at some point Sunday night or Monday morning.
