AMES, Iowa – Iowa State will carry on its special tradition of a defensive lineman wearing No. 58 this season.
The number honors former Iowa State defensive line coach Curtis Bray, who passed away in 2014 from a pulmonary embolism. Bray wore No. 58 during his outstanding collegiate career at Pittsburgh from 1988-92.
The legacy will be passed to senior defensive lineman Ray Lima, a two-year starter and two-time all-conference performer who is a member of the Outland Trophy, Nagurski Trophy, Wuerffel Trophy and Lott Impact Award watch lists.
Lima, who was named preseason Second-Team All-American by The Athletic this morning, is one of the top returning interior defensive lineman in the nation.
His defensive line coach at Iowa State, Eli Rasheed, is adamant on keeping the tribute to the Bray family and is confident that Lima will be the perfect representative.
"We talk about what Coach Bray meant to Iowa State daily in our meeting room, and it's important to keep his memory alive," Rasheed said. "Ray signifies everything we want out of a student-athlete and will wear No. 58 with pride."
