AMES, Iowa – Iowa's Keith Duncan connected on a 39-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining as No. 19 Iowa defeated Iowa State, 18-17, Saturday at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones fall to 1-1 this season and Iowa improves to 3-0 overall.
Connor Assalley had put the Cyclones in front 17-15 with a 26-yard field goal with 7:46 remaining, but Iowa marched down the field to answer. Iowa State went down the field following Duncan's fourth field goal and got into Hawkeye territory but penalties derailed the drive as the Cyclones turned it over on downs.
The Cyclone defense held, however and forced a Hawkeye punt with 1:29 remaining. On the ensuing punt, the ball caromed off of a blocking Datrone Young and was recovered by Iowa to end the Cyclones chances of last minute comeback.
The Cyclones had led 7-6 at the end of a first half that took more than four hours to complete due to a pair of lightning delays that totaled two hours and 55 minutes.
ISU's touchdown came on a 51-yard pass from wide receiver Deshaunte Jones to La'Michael Pettway in the first quarter. Iowa's scores came via two field goals from Keith Duncan, including one as the second quarter clock expired.
On the first drive of the second half, ISU extended its lead to 14-6 as Brock Purdy hit Tarique Milton for a 73-yard touchdown strike.
Players of Note…
Milton had a career-high eight receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Purdy was 24-for-34 for 276 yards and one touchdown pass as the Cyclones outgained the Hawkeyes, 418-313, in total offense.
Pettway finished with five catches for 83 yards.
Greg Eisworth finished with a career-high 15 tackles and Lawrence White added 11 for the Cyclone defensive unit.
