AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Oklahoma State (8-2, 4-1 Big 12) defeated No. 16 Iowa State (5-4, 2-1 Big 12), 23-9 in wrestling action at Hilton Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
The Cowboys won seven matches and the Cyclones won three. David Carr was the only Cyclone to get bonus points with a major decision at 157 pounds.
How It Happened
Oklahoma State won three of the first four matches to mount a 10-2 lead. Both teams were deducted one team point for mat-control violations.
Ian Parker got the Cyclones on the board first at 141 pounds with a 5-2 decision over Dusty Hone. Parker used two takedowns and was impressive on top, garnering 4:02 of riding time, which included the entire second period. Parker improves to 14-2 on the year.
David Carr raised his season mark to 14-1 with a 14-6 major decision over Wyatt Sheets in the 157-pound match. Carr led 7-5 late in the second period until scoring a key a takedown with :02 seconds left. He ended the match with five takedowns.
The Cowboys won at 165 pounds and claimed three more team points in a pivotal match at 174 pounds, as Joe Smith narrowly defeated Sam Colbray, 5-2, to go ahead 16-6.
Iowa State was able to gain three points at 285 with Gannon Gremmel winning a 6-2 decision over Cornelius Putnam. A first-period takedown by Gremmel was the difference in the match.
