AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Sami Williams was named a member of the Softball America 2020 NCAA Preseason All-America Team, the organization announced Monday. Williams, entering her senior campaign, earned honorable mention All-American honors from Softball America following the 2019 season.
Williams was also named the No. 34 player in the country in Softball America's Top-100 Players rankings last week.
The native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., returns to the diamond after putting together one of the finest individual seasons in Iowa State history last year. Williams set single-season program records for hits (82), doubles (25), home runs (17) and runs scored (59). Williams has also shattered ISU's career doubles record with 59 to her name, eclipsing the previous record of 41 set in 2015. Her .398 batting average as a junior is also the fifth-best single-season mark in Iowa State history.
Williams, a First Team All-Big 12 selection, ended her junior season as the the NCAA DI leader in doubles (25). She was also named to the NISC All-Tournament team after leading Iowa State to a runner-up finish in the program's first appearance in a national postseason tournament since 1988.
Iowa State completed its 2019 campaign with a 37-25 record, tied for the program's most wins in a single season since 1981.
Williams and Iowa State are set to open the 2020 campaign on Thursday, Feb. 6 vs. Memphis in the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
