AMES, Iowa – Iowa State rookies Isheem Young (DB) and Darrell Simmons (OL) were named to The Athletic's Freshman All-American Second Team, announced today by the organization's staff writers.
Young was the Big 12's Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year and Simmons was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection in their debut seasons.
Young, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., has started eight games in his inaugural campaign as a Cyclone, leading all Big 12 freshman tacklers with 46.
Young is also tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles.
Young posted seven tackles vs. Oklahoma and West Virginia. His interception in the end zone against the Sooners sealed the victory for the Cyclones.
Against Kansas, Young had four tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble and two PBU.
Simmons, who hails from Belleville, Ill., has been integral part of Iowa State's offensive resurgence as a member of the Cyclone offensive line, a unit that was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award.
Simmons has started the last nine games at right guard, helping the Cyclones rank third in the Big 12 in scoring (32.8) and total offense (441.1).
The 6-3, 306-pounder has paved holes for the nation's leading rusher Breece Hall and protected All-Big 12 QB Brock Purdy, who was sacked a Big 12-low 13 times.
