AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell announced today three additions to his roster who will be eligible to compete in 2020.
The new Cyclones include defensive back Greg Ross, a graduate transfer from North Carolina, kicker Alex Probert, a graduate transfer from Liberty, and tight end DeShawn Hanika, a transfer from Butler Community College.
Ross, a native of Temple Hills, Md., will give the Cyclone secondary a boost of experience. Ross started 11 games and recorded 57 tackles in his career at North Carolina. The former Tar Heel played in all 13 games in 2019, registering 26 tackles and ranking second on the team in pass breakups with five.
The 6-0, 190-pounder will be a redshirt senior in 2020.
Probert is a seasoned veteran placekicker who proved to be an outstanding kickoff man in his four seasons at Liberty. A native of Andover, Minn., Probert will enter his final season with a career 73.0 percentage on field goals (46-of-63).
Probert was instrumental in Liberty's 2019 Cure Bowl championship team, making 13-of-19 field goals and 50-of-53 PATs. He missed just one kick inside 40 yards.
The redshirt senior improved every season on kickoffs, averaging a career-best 62.5 yards per kickoff in 2019. His kickoffs resulted in touchbacks 64.6 percent (51-of-79) of the time last season.
Hanika, who hails from Topeka, Kan., was a two-sport all-stater (football and basketball) as a prep at Hayden High School. He led his team to the Class 4A semifinals as a senior, catching 60 passes for over 1,000 yards.
At 6-6, 225 pounds, Hanika also led his team to a state title in hoops as a senior.
Hanika redshirted in his only season at Butler Community College and will be a redshirt freshman in 2020.
