FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – For the second-straight season, the last weekend of January was special for the Iowa State men's distance medley relay. Once again, Iowa State took down its school record in the event at the Razorback Invitational Friday evening at the Tyson Track Center.
The team of Jason Gomez, Cebastian Gentil, Alex Lomong and Wesley Kiptoo finished second on the night in 9:27.90, taking down the previous school record 9:28.20 set last Jan. 31 at the Indiana Relays by Festus Lagat, Gentil, Roshon Roomes and Edwin Kurgat. Iowa State's top-eight DMR squads in program history have come in the last seven seasons.
The mark all but assures ISU's spot in the DMR at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville March 12-13. The mark checks in at No. 2 nationally for the year, behind race winner Oregon's collegiate record of 9:19.42, and is No. 8 on the collegiate all-time list.
Gomez, who last week ran to another NCAA No. 2 mark with his 1:47.02 at 800 meters, put Iowa State ahead at the first exchange, covering his 1,200 in 2:49.43. Gentil kept the Cyclones in the lead with a 47.62 carry. Alex Lomong carried in 1:50.78 for 800 before handing off to Kiptoo, the Big 12 cross country champion and making his ISU indoor track debut, who covered his 1,600 meters in 4:00.07 to bring home the school record.
In other Iowa State action, Tatiana Aholou made her first appearance for ISU in the women's long jump a solid one, finishing fifth with a best effort of 19-11 3/4 (6.09m). Her jump puts her at No. 8 in ISU indoor history in the event.
In the men's 200-meter dash, Gage Clay followed up his indoor-best-tying 22.14 with an improvement to 21.89, taking second in his heat.
