AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (12-6, 4-3 Big 12) was able to take the first set off No. 1 Texas (16-0, 7-0 Big 12), but could not carry the momentum as the Longhorns prevailed over the Cyclones 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 14-25, 12-25) Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum. The two teams will take the Hilton Coliseum court again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
Iowa State used an outstanding first-set defensive effort to restrict UT to .094 hitting on the frame and just nine kills, but Texas' attack stepped up to hit at least .350 in each of the final three frames, in addition to firing 10 aces and recording 17.0 total blocks on the night.
In defeat, ISU was led by 12 kills at .333 hitting from Candelaria Herrera, with the Argentinian leading the Cyclone block with three blocks on the night. Kenzie Mantz was also in double figures with 11 kills. With Big 12 digs leader Marija Popovic absent, freshman Allie Petry stepped into the libero role and had a match-high 12 digs. ISU had a solid night serving, firing seven aces with Brooke Andersen recording three.
Set One: Iowa State 26 Texas 24
The Cyclones got off to a great start, taking advantage of four early UT attack errors to move ahead 9-3. Texas was able to rally back within two after a pair of Melanie Parra aces, but ISU was able to hang tough in the lead, not allowing UT back within a point until 19-18 when Andersen was stuffed by Asjia O'Neal and Molly Phillips. The Longhorns took the lead for the first time at 21-20 by blocking Andersen again, but the Cyclone outside got her revenge by firing an ace that put ISU back ahead 22-21. The Cyclones could not convert a pair of set points, but an O'Neal service error gave the Cyclones another chance which Kenzie Mantz took with her sixth kill of the set at 26-24.
Set Two: Texas 25 Iowa State 16
Texas won the first three points of the set on Parra's serve and would not look back, moving ahead 7-1 on a Phillips kill. ISU battled back within two at 7-5 and 13-11, but would not get closer as the Longhorns were able to continue to build up a bigger and bigger lead as the set went along and put ISU out of range. UT hit .357 for the set, getting six kills from Phillips and recorded five blocks to hold ISU to -.026 hitting on the set. O'Neal fired an ace to take the set 25-16 and even the match.
Set Three: Texas 25 Iowa State 14
Again, UT got off to a strong start, utilizing a 4-0 run to move ahead 6-2. The closes ISU would get again was two at 8-6 after a Skylar Fields attack errors, as a 4-0 UT run would move the visitors ahead 14-7. Parra caused ISU problems again from behind the line, firing up a 6-0 run which included a pair of aces, to get UT to set point at 24-13, and they converted on second asking on a Phillips kill at 25-14. UT's defense once again held ISU to negative hitting at -.045, recording another four blocks on the set.
Set Four: Texas 25 Iowa State 12
Logan Eggleston and O'Neal put together a 12-1 run that moved the Longhorns ahead by double figures at 15-5 and put any hope of ISU forcing a fifth set out of the equation. Once again, the ISU attack was held to negative hitting, at -.030 in the final frame of the match via another four Texas blocks. The UT offense, meanwhile, had its best performance of the evening, hitting .409 as a team in the final frame. Fields and Brionne Butler combined for a stuff of Mantz at 25-12 to wrap up the match.
