LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State (12-4, 4-1 Big 12) used a team effort to picked up a 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 19-17) win over Texas Tech (11-7, 1-4 Big 12) Friday evening at United Supermarkets Arena. The Cyclones held off three Texas Tech match points in the final frame to give themselves a chance, which they finally converted in the bonus volleyball segment.
Kenzie Mantz led the ISU attack with a career-high 18 kills. Eleanor Holthaus had a double-double of 16 kills and 12 digs, and during the match became the 11th player in ISU history to reach 1,000 career kills. Brooke Andersen also had a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs, while Candelaria Herrera also had 12 kills and led ISU to a season-best 17.0 total team blocks with eight blocks. Marija Popovic led the back line with 27 digs, while Jaden Newsome just missed out on a triple double with 51 assists, 10 digs and a season-best eight kills.
Set One: Texas Tech 25 Iowa State 21
Texas Tech got out to advantages that Iowa State was able to bring back in but not totally close. TTU got up three at 8-5, four at 10-6 and five at 17-12. All three times ISU was able to get back within a point, the latest at 18-17 TTU on a kill from Kenzie Mantz, but was never able to take the final steps to tie or get back ahead in the frame. TTU went on a 5-1 run to move ahead for good in the frame, with Eleanor Holthaus committing a service error to give the Red Raiders the first 25-21.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 20
After struggling to four first-set attack errors, Holthaus finally got going to begin in the second, firing two kills and a block to help ISU ahead 5-3. Texas Tech worked its way back into it, and was able to move back ahead at 11-10 when Alexis Engelbrecht was blocked by Brooke Kanas. The home team's return to the lead was part of a 7-2 run that saw TTU move ahead 14-11. ISU shuffled the lineup, with Avery Rhodes and Brooke Stonestreet making contributions off the bench to tie the set at 15-15 on a kill from Brooke Andersen. ISU strung together a 6-1 run, capped by a block from Mantz and Candelaria Herrera, to move ahead 19-16. ISU's defense stepped up, recording 5.0 total blocks and holding Tech to .086 hitting for the set. Iowa State evened the match when Holthaus tipped down the line at 25-20.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 23
The set took big swings early. TTU got out to a 6-2 lead, with ISU going on a 5-0 run to move ahead 7-6 on a Jaden Newsome kill, but Tech then going on a 5-1 run to move back ahead 11-8. Iowa State responded with its own 5-1 run, Jaden Newsome's ace putting ISU ahead again 13-12. The set continued to go back and forth, with the set featuring eight ties and six lead changes. The final swap of the lead saw Herrera and Newsome combined for a stuff to put ISU ahead 17-16, part of a 4-0 run that put the Cyclones ahead 19-16. Defense again dominated, despite ISU only hitting .133 for the set, the Cyclone block got another 4.0 stuffs to hold Tech to .086 hitting. Iowa State moved ahead 2-1 in the match when Herrera killed at 25-23 ISU.
Set Four: Texas Tech 26 Iowa State 24
Both attacks stepped up to begin the frame, with ISU converting its first three shots for kills and Texas Tech its first four. ISU was able to battle ahead early, but Tech went on a 5-1 run which included four Brooke Kanas kills to move ahead 14-11. ISU quickly got back within one on a Holthaus ace at 14-13, but TTU got back ahead by three at 17-14 via consecutive Karrington Jones kills. Holthaus and Rhodes combined for a block to tie the set at 18-18, but Tech got the next two points to remain ahead. ISU held off four set points, with Herrera getting consecutive blocks to tie the set at 24-24. However, Tech rallied to take the next two points, with Kenna Sauer killing to force a fifth at 26-24.
Set Five: Iowa State 19 Texas Tech 17
ISU claimed the first two points of the deciding frame, but Tech evened it back up at 3-3. Mantz killed to put ISU ahead again at 4-3, and finally moved back ahead by two at 8-6 on a Herrera tip kill. Tech hung in there and tied it 10-10 when Mantz fired long, and got its first lead of the fifth when Sauer tipped around the ISU block at 11-10. TTU got ahead 12-10 on another Sauer kill, but ISU tied it again at 12s on a Mantz kill. TTU had three match points, all of which ISU survived via Mantz kills. Tech got another match point at 16-15, which ISU survived with a Holthaus kill, which eventually got ISU to a match point on an Andersen tip kill at the net. Tech survived it to tie at 17-17, and ISU got there again at 18-17 on a Herrera kill and finally ended the match when Sauer fired wide at 19-17.
Player of the Match
Kenzie Mantz. The junior had the best match of her Iowa State career, finishing with a career-high 18 kills on the evening to lead the Cyclone attack. Mantz was a reliable source of offense for ISU throughout the match, including getting kills on three Texas Tech match points in the fifth set to keep the contest alive.
