AMES, Iowa – Iowa State football continues to maintain its success on the field and in the classroom.
The College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its Academic All-District 6 Football Team today, and three Cyclones – Charlie Kolar (TE), Brock Purdy (QB) and Colin Newell (OL) – made the list.
Kolar is making his third appearance on the all-district team and Purdy was honored for the second time in his career.
The CoSIDA All-District Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in in the classroom. Every all-district nominee is eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team honors announced in December.
Kolar is a two-time Academic All-American and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. He became the first football player in school history to earn All-America honors on the field and in the classroom.
A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar is one of the best tight ends in the nation for the third-straight year. The two-time All-American and three-time Mackey Award finalist has the most career receiving yards (1,931), receptions (147) and touchdown catches (21) by a tight end in school history.
Kolar is second on the team in receptions (41), receiving yards (506) and touchdown catches (4).
Kolar graduated in the fall of 2020 with a 3.99 cumulative GPA in mechanical engineering. He currently has a 4.00 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in finance.
Purdy, a three-time All-Big 12 quarterback, owns/shares 31 school records in his incredible Cyclone career. He is ISU's all-time career leader in passing yards (11,423), total offense (12,635) and touchdowns passes (77).
The Gilbert, Ariz., native currently ranks fourth nationally in completion pct. (73.4) and has four games completing 80 pct. or more of his passes, the most nationally.
A communication studies major, Purdy holds a cumulative 3.65 GPA and is a three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2020.
Newell is in his fourth season as a starter at center for the Cyclones, owning 36 career starts. Newell was an All-Big 12 First Team recipient in 2020 and been a member of the Rimington Trophy watch list multiple times.
A native of Ames, Newell holds a 3.67 cumulative GPA in family and consumer science.
