AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State cross country program piled up both Big 12 and USTFCCCA Midwest Region honors today following an outstanding showing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships over the weekend.
Wesley Kiptoo (Men's Runner of the Year), Jeremy Sudbury (Men's Coach of the Year), Ashley Tutt (Women's Newcomer of the Year) and Ryan Ford (Men's Newcomer of the Year) all garnered honors from the Big 12, as the Cyclones cleaned up after finishing as the conference's top team at the 2021 NCAA Championships in both the men's and women's races.
Kiptoo (Men's Athlete of the Year), Sudbury (Men's Coach of the Year) and Cailie Logue (Women's Athlete of the Year) were also selected by the USFTCCCA as the award winners for the NCAA Midwest Region.
In his first season as Iowa State's head cross country coach, Sudbury guided the program to its best finish since 1994. Under Sudbury's leadership, the Cyclone men finished as the national runner-up at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Sudbury coached a pair of individuals to All-America honors in Wesley Kiptoo and Thomas Pollard. His team's depth was also on display in the postseason, as the Cyclones had all five of their scorers finish in the top 50 at nationals.
Kiptoo, the 2021 Big 12 cross country champion, capped his junior campaign by leading Iowa State to a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships. Kiptoo, who finished second as an individual at the national meet, keyed the Cyclones' best team finish in 27 years. The native of Marakwet, Kenya took home individual titles from the Nuttycombe Invitational, Big 12 Championship and NCAA Midwest Regional this season.
Logue capped an outstanding 2021 campaign with the finest performance of her cross country career. The senior from Erie, Kansas placed fourth as an individual at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing the 6K race in 19:29.8. Logue's performance led the Iowa State women to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships – the program's best showing since 2014. Logue took home individual titles from the Roy Griak Invitational and NCAA Midwest Regional in 2021.
Ford, a senior transfer from UT Martin, earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors after making an instant impact for the Cyclone men this season. The native of Huntsville, Ala., added depth to the Iowa State lineup that proved vital in the postseason. Ford was in Iowa State's top five in four of five meets this season. He capped the 2021 campaign by finishing in 47th overall at the NCAA Championships to help Iowa State finish as the national runner-up. Ford also garnered All-Big 12 and NCAA All-Midwest Region honors by placing 12th and 14th at the meets, respectively.
Tutt proved to be one of the nation's most impactful transfers this season. The senior was Iowa State's second finisher in all five meets she competed in during the 2021 campaign. Tutt placed fifth overall at the Big 12 Championship and ninth at the NCAA Midwest Regional to garner both All-Big 12 and All-Region honors. Tutt's 50th place finish at the NCAA Championships was essential in helping the Cyclone women break into the top 10 of the team standings and secure the program's best finish since 2014.
