AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) topped Iowa (0-4, 0-2 Big 10) for the 15th time in program history by a score of 191-79, the largest margin of victory in the series. The win cements a Cyclone sweep over the Hawkeyes on the week after victories in both women's and men's basketball.
With the victory, Iowa State solidifies the first win over the Hawkeyes since 2009 and brings the Cyclones officially ahead of the Hawkeyes in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series by 10-9 to close out 2021 competition between the teams. Women's tennis, gymnastics and softball remain in the series.
The trend of moving up all-time performance lists and recording new all-time top times continued as Brinley Horras made the move from No. 10 to 9 on the 1000 free performers list while notching the 11th-fastest time in Cyclone history with 10:07.73, Horras' second addition to the top-times list.
Ashley Bengtson rattled off another improvement in the next event, the 200 free, jumping from No. 10 to 9. Bengtson touched first with a PR of 1:49.78.
Lehr Thorson kept the momentum in Iowa State's favor with her top-time producing finish in the 100 breast of 1:01.71, the 10th-fastest in program history. Thorson now owns 35 percent of 100 breast all-time top times.
Another program top time was handed in the next event as Winter Craig logged 2:02.13, good for No. 20 on the list to mark the second-consecutive competition Craig has contributed to the list.
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith tallied her seventh season Zone cut and fifth on the three-meter with her third-place performance of 304.70. Joscelyn Buss grabbed her first Zone cut in the event and second of her career, finalizing fourth with 285.00. Freshman Lauren Kimball joined Buss in recording a new PR with 268.10 for fifth.
In the 100 free, both Bengtson and Andie Quirke matched their PRs set at the Kansas Classic. Bengston logged the top time with 51.07 and Quirke claimed third with 51.78. Following the 100 free, the Cyclones led the Hawkeyes by a margin of 128-34.
Also handing in a PR was Lucia Rizzo in the 100 fly as she stopped the clock first at 55.28. With the finish, Rizzo advances her name three spots to No. 10 on the all-time performance list. In the next swimming event, the 200 IM, Rizzo cemented another victory with 2:02.47. The senior notches the 18th-fastest time in the event with the finish.
Three swimmers ended the night sweeping their respective events. Emily Haan in the backstroke, Thorson in breaststroke and Brinley Horras in distance events.
"Our team wanted to come in here and try to beat their times set in Topeka and we did that across the board," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "It's unfortunate Iowa is quite down this year but I thought our women really stepped up and swam up to their abilities. Shout out to Brinley for swimming two tough races in the 1000 and 500 free. Lucia Rizzo had a great meet as normal and it was neat to see Andie win the 50 free, she's never won that in a big contest before."
