12.16.2021 | Athletics
AMES, Iowa – A strong push in the winter sports has given Iowa State a 10-9 lead over Iowa in the 2021-22 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with three sports remaining.
After Iowa took a commanding 7-0 lead with wins in soccer, football and volleyball, Iowa State's men's and women's cross country squads flipped the script. The Cyclone men placed second while the women finished third at the NCAA Midwest Regional, compared to 13th and 14th place finishes by the Hawkeye men and women, respectively, to trim the series lead to 7-4 at the conclusion of the fall sports season.
Iowa secured two more points in wrestling, increasing its lead to 9-4, before the Cyclones swept the Hawkeyes on the hardwood. The Iowa State women won a 77-70 thriller over Iowa on December 8, a day before the men's team defeated the Hawks, 73-53, to pull the Cyclones within one in the series.
Iowa State gained its 10-9 series lead with an emphatic 191-79 victory in swimming & diving, Dec. 10.
Three sports – women's tennis, gymnastics and softball – remain to determine the 2021-22 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series champion and will take place in the spring. A win for Iowa State in the 2021-22 rendition of the rivalry contest would tie the all-time series at 8-8-1 and mark the Cyclones' first since 2017-18.
