Vlahovic Leads ISU on Day One in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Iowa State's women's sprinters and hurdlers enjoyed a successful first day at the Doc Hale Elite Meet, with assistant coach Frank Rizzo's squad putting up a collection of strong performances.
Katarina Vlahovic had her 2021 breakthrough in the hurdles on Friday, putting up a pair of outstanding efforts. In prelims, the Canadian matched her personal best she ran at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames last season with an 8.30, earning her the top-seed for the final. About an hour later, she went even faster with an 8.27 to take second place. Her mark improves her No. 4 time in ISU history in the event and, at the time of publication, ranks tied for 15th in NCAA Division I this season.
Tatiana Aholou also had a strong day for the Cyclones, making a pair of finals and earning a pair of fourth-place finishes. In the long jump, her third effort of 19-9 3/4 (6.04m) was her best of the day. Meanwhile in the 60m dash, she qualified for the final in 7.60. On a day that featured six jumps and a prelim-final event all within a two-hour window, Aholou was still strong en route to a fourth-place 7.61 in the final.
Two other Cyclones finished their days with personal bests. In the 60-meter dash prelims, Erika Furbeck notched a PR with a 7.77, while Laurel Hoogensen clocked an indoor PR in the 800m in 2:16.58.
