Cyclones Run-Rule Saint Louis To Open Weekend Series

St. Louis, Mo. – Iowa State (20-5) opened its weekend series vs. Saint Louis (5-10) with an 11-2 run-rule victory at the Billiken Sports Center. Sophomore infielder Carli Spelhaug went 3-of-4 at the plate, setting a new career high with three RBI on the day to pace the Cyclone offense.

Junior Mikayla Ramos got the Cyclones off to a fast start in the top of the first inning. Following a lead-off single up the middle for Spelhaug, Ramos roped a RBI single to left field, allowing the speedy sophomore to score, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Spelhaug gave the Cyclones a spark once again in the top of the third, collecting her first RBI of the day on an infield single that allowed Skyler Ramos to score. Milaysia Ochoa would later drive a RBI single down the left field line as another ISU run crossed home plate to put the Cyclones in front 3-0 through three innings.
Four more Iowa State runs were scored in the top of the fourth inning as the Cyclones took control. Skyler Ramos collected the first of her two RBI doubles, followed by Carli Spelhaug's third hit of the day – a single down the left field line that gave ISU a 5-0 advantage. Sami Williams added a two-RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-0.
Another Skyler Ramos RBI double, followed by a RBI on a Carli Spelhaug ground out, put the Cyclones in run-rule territory in the top of the fifth. However, Saint Louis got on the board with a two-run homer by Sadie Wise to make the score 9-2 after five.
A Logan Schaben two-RBI double in the top of the sixth would be the final straw, as pitcher Karlie Charles put a bow on the series-opening win. Charles went all 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Iowa State and Saint Louis return to the Billiken Sports Center on Saturday for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
