AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-12, 5-9 Big 12) closed out its season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 26-24) win over Wayne State Saturday morning at Hilton Coliseum, completing a two-day sweep of the Wildcats after yesterday's 3-1 win over WSC.
The Cyclones got a career-best day from Kenzie Mantz, who notched 17 kills at .361 hitting to lead the attack. Eleanor Holthaus and Piper Mauck each got double-doubles with 11 kills and 11 digs for Holthaus, and 39 assists and 11 digs for Mauck. Annie Hatch just missed out on a double-double of her own with nine kills and 17 digs. Izzy Enna led the back-row with 19 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Wayne State 23
Wayne State was able to pull ahead early and for the vast majority of the set, was also able to keep the Cyclones at bay. However, ISU was able to rally and get back in it. Mantz killed to tie it at 18-18, but the Cyclones did not take their first lead until right near the very end, when Eleanor Holthaus killed at 22-21. WSC snuck back ahead at 23-22 on a Jaci Brahmer block, but ISU took the final three points, with Holthaus posting back-to-back kills to give ISU the first 25-23.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Wayne State 19
Similar to the first, ISU got ahead early and was able to keep WSC at bay for the most part, with Wayne St. only getting ahead briefly at 8-9. Iowa State finally got its breathing room midway through the set, pulling ahead by five at 18-13 via a 4-0 run capped by an Abby Greiman kill. The Wildcats got back within three at 21-18, but the Cyclones were able to close it out by taking four of the final five points of the set, capping it with an Alexis Engelbrecht kill at 25-19.
Set Three: Iowa State 26 Wayne State 24
Wayne State ran out to a big lead, using a 5-0 and 4-0 run at separate points to establish a 10-3 advantage. The Cyclones got an unexpected spark off the bench from Micah Hall, who on her career debut fired an ace to help get things back in order for ISU. Piper Mauck then led a 4-0 run from behind the service line to get the Cyclones back within two, and then Kenzie Mantz killed to tie the set back up at 15-15. Wayne State recovered to get back ahead and looked ready to force a fourth set after an Elly Larson kill at 23-20, but the Cyclones stormed back to tie it at 23-23, force bonus volleyball and get a match point at 25-24 on an Annie Hatch kill. Holthaus sealed it for ISU on first asking with a kill at 26-24.
Player of the Match
Kenzie Mantz. The sophomore was outstanding yet again for ISU, recording a career-best 17 kills at .361 hitting. The Belle Plaine, Iowa native was a factor throughout the match, going with six kills in the first, four in the second and seven in the third.
